ZMP, a Tokyo robot technology company showed small humanoid robots
called "nuvo" (pronounced as 'nouveau' in French). The 2.5 kg robot
can walk, recognize voice commands and can be controlled from DoCoMo's
FOMA 3G phones.
The robot can be used as an intelligent surveillance device for homes.
For example, when it detects intruders, nuvo calls the owner's movie
phone and send live pictures. The owner can move and control the robot
remotely via the movie phone as he watches the pictures on his
handset.
ZMP takes the orders for a proto-type model from universities and
research institutions now. Although the proto-type costs 3 million yen
(U.S. $27,300), the company plans to release a mass production model
which will be sold around 500,000 yen (U.S. $4,500) before the end of
2004.
